MOSOP faults incessant oil spill in Ogoni – The Guardian News

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has condemned incessant oil spills by Shell Company Limited, saying that the incident is capable of triggering high risk of fire accident as the spill has affected Ogoni land.

Reacting to the recent incident, President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, expressed worry about the safety of residents, as the spill spread into farmlands, and at close proximity to communities, and has continued to flow around the Patrick waterfront.

Nsuke also warned against fire incidents, as fresh oil spill has hit Bodo Community in Ogoni, regretting that there have been eight spills in the area within the past two years, which have affected the neighbourhood of Sugi, in Bodo City of Gokana Local Council.

He said: “The spill was caused by a rupture on the Trans Niger pipeline, which passes through Ogoni to the Bonny export terminal. It is owned by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, the company which has been embroiled in a violent conflict with Ogoni people over pollution.”

The MOSOP President, therefore, wants the oil firm concerned to take immediate steps to contain the spills, calling for an integrity test on the pipelines crossing the Ogoni region and the entire Niger Delta, saying they are death traps.
